And it's not difficult to imagine where the ag-based nickname Irrigators came from for Newell High School, although without shortening it down to Gators, must be real hard for cheerleading squads to work around.     Volunteers undertake preservation of cemeteries  May 25, 2009
    The Episcopal Diocese of South Dakota closed nine small parishes on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in December; many of them have some form of cemetery associated with the church. If the diocese transfers those properties to the tribe, as is hoped, that transfer of title would be subject to "the rights of interested parties to have access to the cemetery for the same purpose as was the case when we did own the property," diocesan chancellor Steven Sanford said.     A former Pine Ridge tribal councilman awaiting sentencing in New Mexico on a drug charge was arrested after testing positive for cocaine.     U.S. District Judge Lawrence Piersol filed an order dismissing one count of aiding and abetting murder against John Graham, who faces federal murder charges along with Richard Marshall in the slaying of Annie Mae Aquash on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The two men had faced murder charges in 2003, but Piersol threw out the original indictment because it didn't show that either Graham or Aquash belonged to a federally recognized American Indian tribe.     When Kopf was supposedly taking Elk to a military entrance processing center in January 2003, he instead stopped in a remote area of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and kissed her and touched her breasts against her will. A military proceeding found that Kopf had committed an indecent assault on Elk, and he was reduced in rank and removed from recruiting duties, according to court records. (Sioux City Journal)
