    The fishermen sent out a mayday call Friday afternoon when they were about 22 miles east of Unalaska Island in the Aleutians. The Coast Guard cutter Munro heard the call and headed to the area while asking for help from any other nearby vessels. (Longview Daily News, WA)

    Bering crab season off to smooth start  Oct 27, 2009
    The Coast Guard's marine safety detachment in Unalaska conducted exams aboard 41 of the 93 vessels that registered for this season. The Coast Guard said no overloading of pots was noted, but a few deficiencies -namely expired life rafts, hydrostatic releases and electronic position indicating radio beacon batteries - were found during safety checks. The driver stammered an apology but was unable to stop his actions. The complainant did not wish to pursue charges."
